Description
Madan Sara is a little bird originally from sub-Africa that gathers in huge numbers, making a lot of happy noise! Because the women (and some men) who take to the roads to sell their merchandise across Haiti are known, among other things, for their extraordinary loudness, they have acquired the name Madan Sara.
The history of the Madan Saras is a lovely story about the cultural and commercial activities in Haiti that are a part of the country's heritage. These are merchants of the big roads who travel far and wide for months at a time to buy and sell in cities across Haiti.
It is a hard life. Sometimes, the Madan Sara are victims of all kinds of crimes and will sometimes have their goods taken from them unjustly. Still, despite the many hardships, it’s the most wonderful commercial activity throughout Haiti.
This piece describes the wonderful community and enterprise of the Madan Saras: joy, sadness, meetings between the sellers, and the ambiance and bustle of market day.
The first movement introduces the story. The second expresses the sadness, nostalgia, and a little bit of joy that are all part of the life of a Madan Sara. The last movement describes the hubbub of the market, the delight at making money, excitement, talking, and laughing—all of this because it is the big market day!
I was inspired by several traditional Haitian rhythms in this piece, including RARA, a traditional pre-Easter street festival that lasts for several weeks. Listeners will also hear a diversity of other culturally influential rhythms.
